Get Involved in HBA Programs

If you are looking for a rewarding way to get involved in your community, consider volunteering for one of the HBA's many public education programs. This year, why not consider volunteering for one of the programs described below? To volunteer or for more information, contact Lucy Fisher at (713) 759-1133.

Elder Law
The HBA Elder Law Program needs volunteers who are interested in visiting senior centers on a bi-monthly basis to provide legal advice and intake for senior citizens, answering legal questions, giving legal advice, and identifying special legal problems. The program is presented in partnership with physicians from Harris County and is held in the fall and spring. The Elder Law Committee also needs volunteer attorneys, legal assistants, and notaries for its annual Will-A-Thon, which provides wills and medical directives to needy seniors. Attorneys who would like to work with this program should call (713) 759-1133.  [Top]

IDEA
The Inter-professional Drug Education Alliance (IDEA) is a drug awareness program aimed at fifth grade students throughout Houston. The program is presented in partnership with the Harris County Medical Society and is held in the fall. Volunteers for the program are needed as part of doctor/lawyer teams that speak to fifth grade classes about both the legal and medical consequences of substance abuse. IDEA requires a time commitment from 8:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on the days of the program, Thursday, October 23, 2008 and Tuesday, May 5, 2009. To volunteer call (713) 759-1133.  [Top]

LegalLine
LegalLine is the HBA's twice a month program that provides callers with legal advice, the answers to legal questions, and referrals to other legal and social service agencies for help with problems. As one of the HBA's most popular programs, LegalLine is always in need of  "on-call" volunteers or law firms that are willing to handle a two-hour shift as needed. LegalLine is held on the first and third Wednesday of each month, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. To volunteer call (713) 759-1133.

Consejos Legales, sponsored by the Mexican American Bar Association and the Hispanic Bar Association, provides the same service for Spanish-speaking people on the first Thursday of each month, from 6-8 p.m.

The Asian community sponsors a Vietnamese LegalLine every third Tuesday of the month, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.
