Diversity and Inclusion (formerly MOILP)


This committee organizes and implements a summer clerkship program for first-year law students from the three Houston law schools to encourage equal opportunities for minority lawyers in the legal profession. Provides educational service and support programs for minority law students. The committee also coordinates a diversity award.

To all applicants: If you are selected to participate in the program, you must comply with all program requirements, including, but not limited to, attending the spring law clerk boot camp, participating in the mentoring program, and completing a program evaluation at the end of the summer.

Thursday, January 16, 2020, 5:30pm – 7:30 pm – Student Interview Panel and D&I Meet & Greet. All interested students are invited to attend the D&I Interview Panel to learn valuable tips for your upcoming interviews. The Panel will be followed directly by a meet and greet with HBA D&I employer participants and former D&I clerks. This is a great opportunity to network with these attorneys and potential employers.

Tuesday, January 21, 2020, no later than 5:00 p.m. – Student Application Submission Deadline. All student applications must be submitted to the D&I Committee by this date. The HBA D&I Committee will review and forward the completed application(s) to the employers selected by the students. The employers will select the students they wish to interview. Employers will contact students directly to schedule interviews at their offices.

Friday, February 28, 2020 – Deadline for Employers to Complete Interviews. The length of clerkship, work performed, and salary, if applicable, is determined by each employer.

Friday, March 6, 2020 – Deadline for Employers to Extend Offers.

Friday, March 13, 2020 – Offer Acceptance Deadline. By this date, students must inform the HBA and their law school career services office whether they have accepted an offer. STUDENTS MAY ONLY ACCEPT ONE (1) OFFER THROUGH THE D&I PROGRAM.

Saturday in late March or early April – Mandatory Spring “Boot Camp.” STUDENTS WHO ACCEPT OFFERS THROUGH THE PROGRAM MUST ATTEND THIS EVENT. All other students are welcome to attend. At the mandatory boot camp, panelists will provide helpful tips for any student who hopes to be successful during their summer clerkships. [Update March 16: "Boot Camp" may be held as a webinar. Check back for updates.]
