Your Vote Your Voice Our Democracy - the 19th Amendment at 100

Law Day is celebrated across the country each year on May 1 as a “special day of celebration by the American people in appreciation of their liberties and to provide an occasion for rededication to the ideas of equality and justice under law.” As part of the HBA's recognition of this annual holiday, we invite students in Harris County, TX to participate in our essay, photography, and poster contests.

Essay Contest

9th - 12th grade students only

Prompt: What impact has the 19th Amendment had on our society, culture and democracy?

Rules:

  • Open to students attending 9th - 12th grades at any school in Harris County.
  • Must show critical analysis and be based on historical evidence.
  • Must be original work of one student.
  • No longer than 500 words, type-written, double-spaced, single sided, no staples.
  • Each page must include a header with the title and page number only.

Cover page must include the following:

  • Title of entry
  • Student name
  • Student address (to mail prize if selected)
  • Student phone and email
  • Parent’s name, phone and email
  • Student grade level
  • School name and district
  • Teacher’s name, phone and email

Prizes: $1,100 total in cash prizes!

  • 1st place student: $500
  • Teacher of 1st place student: $100
  • 2nd place student: $300
  • 3rd place student: $200

1st Place winner will be invited to awards luncheon, where essay will be printed in program and on display. 1st place entry will be submitted to the State Bar of Texas contest and printed in an issue of The Houston Lawyer magazine as well as printed for poster-sized displays throughout downtown. Winner will be required to submit an electronic copy.

Photography Contest

9th - 12th grade students only

Prompt: Depict the impact the 19th Amendment has had on our society, culture and democracy.

Rules:

  • Open to students attending 9th - 12th grades at any school in Harris County.
  • Must be original work of one student, not have been published in any medium, and have been taken after June 1, 2019.
  • One entry per student.
  • First-place winner agrees to submit enlarged duplicate of photograph at own expense for display use.
  • Color as well as black and white photographs are eligible.
  • Must show technical knowledge of good composition, exposure and lighting.
  • Photographs must be between 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 inches and not mounted or framed. Matting is acceptable.
  • All expenses are entrant’s responsibility.
  • The student gives the Houston Bar Association the right to reproduce any photograph submitted in any medium without time, use, or territorial limitation as long as it is for non-commercial purposes.
  • The HBA bears no responsibility for lost or damaged entries.

Poster Contest

Kindergarten - 8th grade students only

Prompt: Depict the impact the 19th Amendment has had on our society, culture and democracy.

Rules:

  • Open to students attending kindergarten - 8th grades at any school in Harris County.
  • Must be original work of one student.
  • One entry per student.
  • Standard poster board size, 22 x 28 inches required.
  • Attach completed form to the back of submission -- Click here to download the submission form.
  • No three-dimensional or computer-generated art.

Prizes: 3 categories: K-2nd grade, 3rd-5th grade, 6-8th grade. $1,350 total in cash prizes!

  • 1st place student in each category: $200
  • Teachers of 1st place students: $100
  • 2nd place students: $100 each
  • 3rd place students: $50 each

Special Needs Photography Contest

Special needs students ages 12 - 22 only

Prompt: Laws help us.

Rules:

  • Students ages 12-22 enrolled in special education/life skills classes in Harris County.
  • All expenses are entrant’s responsibility.
  • Must reflect theme “Laws help us.”
  • Photographs must be created by the entrant, not have been published in any medium, and have been taken after June 1, 2019.
  • The student gives the Houston Bar Association the right to reproduce any photograph submitted in any medium without time, use, or territorial limitation as long as it is for non-commercial purposes.
  • The HBA bears no responsibility for lost or damaged entries.
  • Color and black and white entries are eligible.
  • Photographs must be between 5 x 7 - 8 x 10 inches and not mounted or framed. Matting is acceptable.
  • Only one entry per student, no team entries.

Special Needs Poster Contest

9th - 12th grade special needs students only

Prompt: Laws help us.

Rules:

  • Special needs students in 9th-12th grade may participate as individuals or in teams of up to five.
  • Standard poster board size, 22 x 28 inches, required, using materials and media of choice.
  • No 3-dimensional art or use of syndicated, copyrighted or clip art images allowed. Must be an original concept.
  • Judging will be based on quality of design, creativity, originality of artwork and slogan, and adherence to theme.
  • Adhere completed form to the back of submission, including parental release for each student. No paperclips. Click here to download the submission form.

Rules for teams, in addition to above:

  • The actual physical work to create the poster (drawing, coloring, painting, lettering, pasting, cutting, etc.) should be done entirely by the special needs student team members.
  • Student coaches may demonstrate tasks, participate in practice sessions, prepare “mock-ups” for demonstration and offer guidance and feedback during the actual creation, but the actual entry must be prepared entirely by the special needs student member(s).
  • All members of a team must participate by playing some role in the creation of the poster entry.
  • Work with student coaches (if any) to develop, plan and create a poster that conveys the theme “Laws help us.” Encouraged to include theme language on entry.

Prizes for team entries: Special Needs team entries receive participation certificates! Members of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winning teams will receive Law Day medals and 1st place teacher will receive a recognition plaque for the classroom.
All winning entries will be displayed in downtown courthouse.
